Jimmy was born and brought up
in Salthouse. He was apprenticed to a blacksmith in a nearby village and,
after he married and settled in Sheringham, he became well known
in his trade specialising in skilled wrought iron work in his later years.

In 1940 Jimmy High wrote his
autobiography, and some of it - his boyhood in Salthouse - was
reproduced in the Salthouse book with the permission of his granddaughter
Gillian Read.
