The South end (the top) of Cross Street Salthouse
Gerald Cubitt who took this photo in the 1940s to 50s, says:
"It is interesting to note that many of the approach roads to Salthouse, such as the top of Cross Street and part of Purdy Street as it runs down from Bard Hill, are all some 7 to 8 feet below the level of the fields on either side of them. It is true that before these roads were made up, water running down from the higher land would have helped to carve them out, but the depth of the road also indicates the great age of these access roads which have carried the traffic of ages past, to and from the village of Salthouse."
