The 1841 census was the first good census extant for the whole county.
The questions asked were different from the questions in censuses which followed. This 1841 census asked only if you were born in the county of Norfolk and did not ask for an individual's birthplace.
Here are the official instructions on the example page for the Census recorders in 1841 when they visited Salthouse to take down the details of all the people present in the village.
They were instructed to indicate only:
Whether born in same County or Whether born in Scotland, Ireland or Foreign parts.
I = Ireland, Y = born in Norfolk, N = Not born in Norfolk,
S = born in Scotland, and F = born in Foreign Parts.
and to enter the ages thus:
OFFICIAL DESCRIPTION OF ENTERING AGES.
Write the age of every person under 15 years of age as it is stated to you. For persons aged 15 years and upwards write the lowest of the term of 5 years within which the age occurs.
e.g. aged 15 years and under 20 years - write 15
aged 20 years and under 25 years - write 20
aged 25 years and under 30 years - write 25
aged 30 years and under 35 years - write 30
aged 35 years and under 40 years - write 35
aged 40 years and under 45 years - write 40
and so on up the greatest age.
This may help to explain any discrepancies in dates arising from recorded ages in the census.
