SALTHOUSE FAMILIES IN SOUTH SHIELDS

Glen Matthews extracted the following data from the 1891 census for South Shields, and kindly donated it to the Salthouse History site. He says:

'Many people moved to South Shields from in and around Salthouse. I suppose with so much sea travel between the 2 areas and the decline in agriculture combined with the expansion of South Shields it was inevitable that so many people would be attracted to the North.'

The Dews were at Shields in 1881 and had William Spence a seaman from Salthouse staying with them. His wife was also staying. Whether they were related to Charlotte Elizabeth Spence (nee Grout) who was on the 1891 census is not apparent. In 1881 Charlotte was in South Shields with her husband John Spence who was a grocer and was also from Salthouse. There were no children shown.

Mary Dix [née Hancock] who was shown in 1891 as being born in Norfolk somewhere was in fact living in Shields in 1881 with her husband James Dix a Mariner both of whom were from Salthouse. [see James Dix, Master Mariner - is this the same couple?]
In the 1891 census there was also a Mary Dix head from Norfolk (place not known) She was 55 and was a hosier. She had a son and daughter George and Martha both born in South Shields [This is definitely the same Mary Dix - her husband James, the Master Mariner, was drowned in 1885. Her son James, in his last letter home before he was killed by falling from the yard arm, refers to Martha and George -the two youngest members of the family.]

Margaret Christiana Pigott was in Shields in 1881, her husband William was a mariner and both from Salthouse. The other Pigott family do not appear to have been in Shields in 1881.

Mary Ann Pegg was a boarder in South Shields in 1881 living with Matthew and Hannah Holman. Matthew was a labourer from Thursford in Norfolk and Hannah was from Salthouse. [see the three Holman brothers who came to Salthouse from Thursford, in the Alphabetical list of families

William Bullard was on the ‘Cornucopia” at the time of the 1881 census.
