John Dewing Jarvis and his family c 1858

John Dewing Jarvis with his wife Sarah with their four youngest children:
Edward, David Parlett, John Dodman and Georgiana.

Gina, the great granddaughter of John Dodman, says: 'Judging from the age of the children I’d guess the picture was taken in around 1858 or 59.  Strange to think that little David grew up to find himself sheltering on the top floor of the mill during the ‘Great Rage’ of 1897.

Val (editor) says: I am sure this is what is now known as Barn Cottage on the Coast Road. The front extension, which was Sarah Jarvis' Grocers shop, was washed away by the 1953 flood.
