1901 Census Extracts

Highs and Pigotts of Salthouse and Cley-next-the-sea

These extracts were made by Michael Austin who sent them to me after we met at the Salthouse History Exhibition in 2003.
Michael said in his accompanying letter:

“With the release of the 1901 Census index on the internet I had extracted out all those entries with the surname of High or Pigott, who are recorded as being born in Salthouse or Cley-next-the-sea. I then sorted them on the page reference, which groups all those people with the same surname on the same census page together, and these usually form a family group. However occasionally you do get two families with the same name on the same census page and in this case the families become intermingled, but the process does mean you can extract a reasonable amount of information without going to the expense of downloading a lot of payable pages. It was during this process that I came across some interesting strays like:

“Gabriel Pigott's wife Elizabeth and daughter Caroline, living in Middlesbourgh (family 375354),
Thomas Pigott (baptised 15 Apr 1849, Salthouse) living in Nottingham (family 693907), - actually Radford, Nottingham according to the 1881 census [RG 11/3343 f:98 p:13],
Margaret Pigott, daughter of Richard Bloom Pigott in Sunderland (family 796529),
and Gabriel Pigott (baptised 7 Jan 1849, Salthouse) in South Shields (family 1175939) and Westoe, Durham in 1881 [RG 11/5010 f:42 p:16].
as well as several others. By then doing a further extraction for those surnames in the identified census place, you can get the rest of the people on the same page, with the same surname.

“The end result of this is the 7-page extract, which I have enclosed.
Whilst the index does not state relationships and some groups obviously consist of more than one family, it does make interesting reading and helps identify which pages are worth paying for.”

It does make fascinating reading! — I have transcribed this first page of his print-out, and more will follow.
Hillery Pigott, in the second family here, married Hannah Holman and lived in Salthouse in his early married life.
Someone told me Hillery went to Gresham's School, and now I see that it was probably Gresham village school!
